| Description: |
A CN local passes SOO 736 while traversing Telulah Park as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 5 Jul. '21. The local was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. SOO 736, an Alco 4-6-2, was donated to the City of Appleton by the Soo Line, through the efforts of John M. Balliet. Balliet paid for the construction of a temporary spur to get the locomotive into the park, the gravel and asphalt pad under the locomotive, a fence to deter vandals, as well as landscaping around the display. The locomotive arrived on 14 Nov. ‘59. When asked why he did it, he said, “so that children would know what [steam locomotives] looked like.” He owned an insurance agency, but railroads were a hobby. He served as a director for Missouri Pacific, Michigan Central, Lake Erie & Eastern, and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie railroads. |

GTW 4934 (GP38-2) rolls light north across S. Perkins St. heading to the north end of Appleton Yard, WI to tie down for the night. GTW 4934 was assigned to L521, a local turn down the Kimberly Spur. This train (as a CN train that is) will soon be discontinued when the new WATCO short line, the Fox Valley and Lake Superior (FOXY) takes control of the Kimberly spur in addition to the New London Branch and Shawano Branch with this area of operations being based out of Appleton. |

A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it drops off some cars for the FV&LS (or FOXY) at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 25 Sep. '20. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975. |
