These locomotives were the largest diesels in the world, and UP made good use of them, putting 2 million miles on the average ones. Description:  Fast at accelerating, and reliable as far as maintenance went during the decade that they served, these engines were ultimately retired because Union Pacific stopped needing them, due to improvements in other designs, horsepower owed UP by other railroads, and a downturn in rail traffic. 14 still exist-this one came to Kenefick Park in 2008.

Description:  Just like a visit to Omaha isnt complete without going to the zoo, a visit to Omaha is also not complete without a visit to Kennefick Park. Just a few short blocks away from the zoo is Omahas Kennefick Part which is home to two UP legends; the largest steam locomotive ever built, the Big Boy, and the largest diesel locomotive ever built, the Centennial. While they are just static displays, getting up close and personal with some of the largest pieces of machines ever built is absolutely fascinating. I made my last visit to Kennefick in 2021 when I was last in Omaha, but I arrived in the city after dark, so I only grabbed some exposures. Now, I was finally going to get some daylight shots. Originally, we were supposed to all go as a group. But, most of the group was long exhausted from walking around the zoo all day, so I ended up going myself. Which, regardless, I wasnt going to leave Omaha without visiting anyway regardless if anyone was with me or not. The locomotives overlook I80 from atop a hill just across the Nebraska/Iowa border. A truly welcome sight to railfans and other passerbys alike.

Description:  A roster of UP 6900. Last year, Centennial No. 6936 returned to active service now under the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America in Silvis, IL. Dad and I had the opportunity to see it running during their open house back in June of last year. The Centennial definitely looks to be in a bit better shape than its Big Boy counterpart, but I'm glad that these Omaha staples are still standing strong!
