PRR 9454, FF-16, 1964 |
Description: |
8th Street. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 12 January 1964. Prominent here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9454, #9630-B, #9717, #9594, and #8576. #9454 is an FF-16 built by Fairbanks-Morse in September of 1950, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in April of 1965. #9630-B is an AF-16 built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in January of 1967. #9717 and #9594 are BF-16's built by Baldwin-Lima Hamilton, rated at 1,600 horsepower each, and retired in July of 1966; #9717 was built in March of 1951 and #9594 was built in April of 1951. #8576 is an ES-15M built by GM-EMD in September of 1953 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. In this context, they're about to pass under the 8th Street Bridge in Juniata on their way to the East Altoona Roundhouse for servicing. Visible in the immediate background are at least eight cabin cars and PRR engine #7923, an ES-12 built by GM-EMD in November of 1957 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. |

Altoona Action. Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 April 1965. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8701, ##9729, #9721, #9717, and #9712. #8701 is an FS-24M "Train Master" built by Fairbanks-Morse in August of 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower; it's moving the four "Sharks" to the East Altoona deadline storage yard. #9729, #9721, #9717, and #9712 are all BF-16's built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in early 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower each, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of service. Not one PRR "Shark" was preserved for posterity. |
