UP Tie Gang |
| Description: |
The Tie Gang was hard at work right up to Butler Street. I talked with one of the foremans while I was grabbing my shots and he said they intended on being into Sterling by Tuesday. I was surprised to see them working on a weekend, but apparently this was a Friday-Tuesday job, and they were getting double time for it thanks to the holiday. Well worth it! |

UP 8124 |
| Description: |
Sterling was another location that I had planned on stopping at to get a train. Plenty of abandoned buildings line the tracks here, and it had been a while since I had shot a train, specifically a westbound here. So, with the CWSNA gone, I hunkered down and waited for my next train. A westbound Z train had gone through Rochelle, which I had assumed would be the next move I would see, but I was pleasantly surprised when I heard a horn from the west, which was another ethanol train. Never got a symbol for this one either. |

Thanks to each train having to get permission to continue through the work limits at Nelson, I was able to figure out that I had another westbound coming. I knew it would take a while for the train to reach me, so I decided to grab a quick bite to eat at Dairy Queen for lunch before hunkering down at the industrial park crossing. A short wait and MCHCB greeted me leaving Sterling with another unrebuilt AC4400CW on the point. |

Dark signals at Galt and nothing over the detector at Agnew had me continuing west. Now it was time to rely on the railcam at Clinton for trains. I turned it on, and sure enough, an eastbound was crossing the river. Morrison was another location I had planned on stopping and waiting for a while. THe westbound shot at Morrison provides a great view of all the concrete grain elevator structures there. However, westbound traffic had seemed to come to a standstill, and nothing had passed the Rochelle camera in well over an hour at this point. After a while of waiting though, eastbound ZLTG2 was seen on the Clinton cam, so I had to opt for the much less interesting eastbound shot. Still, pretty neat nonetheless. A rebuilt Dash 9 in on the helm of the Z train today. |

BNSF 7634 |
| Description: |
Since I was staying in the Quads, the goal for the day was to follow the UP as far as the east side of Fulton, IL where BNSFs Barstow Sub flies over the top and heads south to Colona, which would get me fairly close to where I was staying. With no sign of a westbound on the Rochelle cam, no sign of an eastbound on the Clinton cam, but a sign of a southbound on BNSF, I decided to break ties with the UP for the day and begin heading south. I chose the grain elevator at Fenton as my prop for southbound Z-LVWRUF9-28, a grain train bound for the Transcon at Galesburg and eventually Rudd Bros. Grain in Toluca. |

The southbound grain train had not one, but two northbound bulk trains to meet at Warner, so it was back to Colona for both of them. IL 92 through this area is quite busy, and there are no places to pull off. So, I knew I would have to have nobody behind me if I was going to give this a try. Shockingly, as I pulled up to the bridge, I had no one behind me. A quick step out and grab. Sweet! |

I knew I had a IAIS RISI working out to my west somewhere. Where however was anyones question. I decided to follow the tracks as closely as I could until I found a sign that the train was even still out there. The thunderstorms had made their way into the area by this point, but thankfully they weakened below severe limits, and the strongest of the storms were moving more to the north instead. I made it all the way to Rock Island with no sign of anything moving. About to give up, I made it to the bridge over the Mississippi River and heard them tone up dispatch saying they were heading back across the river. Sure enough, there they were. I rushed back to the Rock Island Depot in town and got the train slowly easing through the Rock Island yard. This was a shot that I had wanted to get the last time I was here with Dad as well. Glad to mark this one off, despite it being almost impossible to keep water drops out of the lens at this point! |

The plan to start the day tomorrow was to head up to Clinton for church at Trinity Lutheran where a former fieldworker from my home church is the pastor at. I also wanted to check out Nahant, so I tried to decide whether I wanted to do that this evening, or go early the next morning to check it out. I was staying at the brand new Comfort Inn in Bettendorf, only about 2 miles from the CP. So, once I checked in and got settled into my room (which was very nice by the way), I decided to brave the crummy weather and head back out. When I pulled up to the Mound Street/US 67 intersection, the lights were activated for the crossing at Mound Street. And sure enough, there was CP 252 barreling down on it. The light turned green and I quick tried to gain enough distance between the train and I before stopping. I took quite a bit of a risk stopping along US 67 for a shot of the train with the Mississippi River in the background. Well worth it though. |

To my surprise, once I got back, the RC Job had begun to pull a string of cars out of the yard. I quick positioned myself at the Concord Street crossing to nab a shot of it. When Dad and I were here last year, the RC Job was a Pacman SD40-2 and a GP20C-ECO. Today, its a GP20C-ECO and a rebuilt SD40-2. Not quite as exciting, but Ill take it. This would ultimately end up being the final train of the day. I heard a IAIS train get a warrant from the west into Davenport, but it would not show up before it got dark. I had plans to get Panera Bread for supper since I was dealing with some stomach issues earlier in the day. But thanks to waiting forever on the IAIS train that didnt show, I ended up having to settle for Burger King instead. Oh well. Back to the hotel for a good nights sleep and another day of trains the next day. I added another 22 train today, bringing the grand total up to 46 for the trip so far. Not bad! One more almost full day of trains before meeting with the rest of the youth group later in the evening! |

CP 8707 |
| Description: |
My final day of train watching had arrived before meeting the remainder of the group that evening. However, being Sunday, my day would get started a little later in the day, as I was headed to church at Trinity Lutheran in Clinton, IA this morning. One of our former fieldworker/seminarians at my home congregation back in Indiana is now the resident head pastor at Trinity, and is a good friend of mine, and being in the area, I decided that I wanted to make a quick visit before starting my day. US 67 closely follows the CP north into Clinton, and is the main route between the Quads and Clinton. So, I guess you could say I was starting my train day a little bit before church. I gave myself just enough of a gap in the morning that would allow myself to stop if there was a train coming. A quick breakfast at the hotel, and I was off heading back north. All the railroads in the Quads were fairly quiet this morning, and I wasnt expecting to run into anything. About halfway into my journey north at Le Claire is when the radio finally came to life, signifying that I had a southbound coming my direction. I quick pulled off and sure enough the siding signals were lit. A few minutes later came CP 576 rolling through with a sole GEVO on the front. Unfortunately, do to the extreme humitidy, I was unable to keep my lens from fogging up, and this was the best I could do. Oh well. |

When I arrived in Clinton, I had just enough time to quick check out the UP Yard before going to church. A pair of standard cab EMDs await their next assignments in the yard. |

While taking photos of the power in the yard, UP MNPPR was just taking off from its crew change as well. I quick relocated over to the Mississippi River bridge to grab it winding out of town. Its pretty weird not having the signal bridge in this location anymore! |

One of the shots I wanted to make sure I had before leaving Clinton was a shot of a train coming over the bridge. The DP on MNPPR got me just that, and before church on top of that! |

CP 2309 |
| Description: |
After a wonderful service and a great chat with Pastor, I was back out on the road again. I had a decision to make; I could either continue following the UP west as far as Calamus, or I could drop back down to the Quads for the day. Being a Sunday, I knew most of the local operations in the Quads would not be working, so I opted to stay and follow the UP west. The goal was to meet the rest of the group at the Iowa 80 Truckstop. So, the tiny town of Calamus would be my target point, and from there I would drop straight south. I decided to hang around a bit longer in Clinton though to see if I could muster up anything else moving. It was very dead when I got back trackside, so I decided to go look around the massive ADM complex and see if I could find anything sitting. CPs local power here for the moment was a GP20C-ECO. |

Then as I was taking photos of the switchers, I heard a rumble getting louder, then flanges squealing. I sprinted as fast as I could over to the depot and was able to nab CP 261 passing it just in time. |

UP 5552 |
| Description: |
I had a tied down coal train that was getting a crew just to the west of me at 5th Street, so I decided to head back toward the river bridge and wait for it to depart. As it turned out, it was a CP crew that was getting on that would take the train north into Wisconsin. I moved back to the bridge and after a little while, CP 853 toned up UP Dispatch to get lined to their side, and the train rolled northbound. |

UP 1080 |
| Description: |
I could hear one of the yard trimmer jobs working the west end of the yard on UP, so I headed over there to check it out. The train had pulled out of the yard quite a ways, so I had to wait on them to shove back to grab another cut. It ended up taking much longer than I had expected, and a brief but heavy rainshower went through which almost made me give up on it. But, the waiting paid off when I finally heard the conductor on Utility 11 tell UP 1080 to backup 40. I dont know about you, but there arent a lot of geeps that look as good as ones in armour yellow out there. |

UP 7053 |
| Description: |
With the yard job now into the yard, and nothing else happening on either one of the main lines, it was time to pack up and continue heading west. I have never followed the UP west of Clinton before, so I was finally getting into some new territory. I came to soon find out that most backroads in Iowa are stone, which really sucked and made the SUV dirty. But, it gives it character and is a good way to show off a solid trip. All was quiet as I came into Low Moor, IA. I found a nice broadside shot right along the road that led into town and thought about how it would be nice if a train showed up then. I got to the crossing, and low and behold, there was a headlight to my east that was less than a mile away. I quickly got turned around and got a little elevation above some of the growth beside the tracks and nabbed UP MMTYC making its way into Clinton for a crew change. |
