Amtrak Cabbage 90250 brings up the rear of Amtrak Cascades #504 as it rolls out of Vancouver. The odd piece of equipment is an NPCU (Non-Powered Control Unit), similar to a cab car. This NPCU is made out of an old Amtrak F40PHR, and was originally built as Amtrak 250 in 1977. When the F40s were retired from mainline service on Amtrak, a handful of them had their engines and traction motors removed, and the empty space filled with a baggage compartment. This earned the units the nickname "Cabbages" (portmanteau of Cab and Baggage). In its 45 year career with Amtrak, the "Cabbage" has worn a total of 4 liveries, plus a commemorative wrap. |

Union Pacific Albina Yard |

While making my way to Vancouver, I fired off a couple shots of the Union Pacific yard in Portland while crossing overhead. This image, while blurry, was still salvageable. The stack train in the background is parked on the main track that bypasses the yard. The bottom tracks are the northernmost tracks of Albina Yard (mostly empty today due to a traffic downturn), and the middle tracks are MOW and engine terminal tracks. Parked on the engine terminal lead are three engines and a slug. After careful examination of the engines and images on rrpicturearchives.net, I was able to identify the middle engine and slug as UPY 3001 and 3002. 3001 is a GP59ECO, an ex-Cotton Belt GP40-2 rebuilt with a 710ECO engine. 3001 is the only engine of its kind on the UP (as far as I was able to deduce), and is mated with slug 3002. 3002 was another Cotton Belt GP40-2. Its engine was removed, and its traction motors now provides increased tractive effort at slow speeds. The two unit set is captive to the Portland area, operating at Brooklyn and Abina Yards. |

Three GEVOs wait to take a BNSF southbound out of Wishram Yard. Once the train has recieved a fresh crew, the train will cross the Columbia River just west of here, and run south on the Oregon Trunk Sub to Chemult and points south. In the lead is BNSF 6880, an ES44C4 built between 2009 and 2015. These units are six-axle, four motor engines (the center axle is an "idler" and has no traction motor). Also in the consist are ES44DC 7822 and ET44C4 3827. |

BNSF 7822 is the second unit on a southbound manifest freight parked in the yard at Wishram. The train is likely waiting on a new crew for the next leg of its journey along the Oregon Trunk Subdivision to Chemult. 7822, like the other engines in this consist, is a product of General Electric. Once the newcomer to the domestic diesel-locomotive market, GE has since become the dominant locomotive manufacturer in the US, and their design for road freight engines has remained the same for the past 30 years. |

DPU Rests In The Siding |
| Description: |
BNSF 6560 is parked on a side track at Avery, just west of Wishram, Washington. We had in fact seen this same train just hours before, when it passed through Dallesport. 6560 is the DPU on this train. It isnt visible in this image, but the manifest freight has been doubled onto the second siding at Avery. After taking on a new crew, this train will be put back together and continue onto the Oregon Trunk Subdivision heading south. This train is likely bound for Klamath Falls, Oakland, or points further south. |
