Album Info:Ten photographs by Esther Fairchild of the "Slonaker" Company coal unloading trestle that was located just north of Amherst and Boscawen Streets in Winchester, Virginia. These photos were made in the summer of 1984 when the trestle was (barely) still in service (date approximate). At the time there were three hoppers on the trestle, a Conrail, a C&O, and an N&W. This trestle was a few hundred feet from the south end of the "Cumberland Valley" branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad (then PC, then CR, then Winchester and Western). The branch, which ran south from Hagerstown, Maryland, to Winchester, is still in use by the Winchester and Western, but it has been stubbed off about a mile north of the trestle's former location. FAQ: Q - Why are the pictures square? A - Esther made these photographs with a Rolleiflex camera using "120" film, which produces square negatives (and prints). They were then scanned into the JPG files you see here, with very little, if any, digital editing.
