Stop board
Title:  Stop board
Description:  Sthp board on the downgrade portion from Topton to Andrews. In the Saluda fashion, trains must turn up retainers for the trip down the grade from Topton to Andrews (and likewise from Topton to Nantahala).

Cresting the Red Marble Grade
Title:  Cresting the Red Marble Grade
Description:  Here is the summit of the Red Marble Grade at Topton, NC (milepost T-90.5). The Red Marble Grade has grades that rival the Saluda Grade further to the east. Grades on Red Marble average about 4 percent, but people famtliar with that part of the Murphy Branch say that some of the fills may have settled to as steep as 6 percent. Topton is also the location of the Southern Railways interchange with the Graham County Railroad. The interchange is hard to see now due to growth, but the interchange is about 2/10s of a mile behind us. This was literally a iiterchange in the middle of a mountain. Topton siding was located just west of the US 129 overpass in the photo.

Now for the downhill run
Title:  Now for the downhill run
Description:  No 1702 is stopped and the train is balanced over the crest of Red Marble. The grades on the western slope of Red Marble is not as steep as the east slope, but inspection of running gear and retainers must be set before decending to Andrews.

Farms and Barns
Title:  Farms and Barns
Description:  The whole line of the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is absolutely beautiful, but the segment from milepost 80 to Andrews is by far my favorite. I sure wish GSMRR ran this part on a regular basis.

Mountain and 1702
Title:  Mountain and 1702
Description:  1702 Passing through a residents front lawn and private crossing at milepost T-91.5 things are not so pretty 2/10s of a mile here as a land owner, upset with GSMRR for claiming their ROW, took it at liberty to pile up junk cars from his junkyard as high as he possibly could to block out the view.....oh well, some people have no respect for the beauty they are blessed to live in.
