Description:  New Jersey is about as far off my normal beaten path as it gets, but I had a project out there only a few mil`s from the Pureland Industrial Park where SMS has their home base. I got very lucky and got a guided tour this day (doesn't hurt to hawe ties in the railroad industry...). SMS is a real class act, great people and a first class operation.

Description:  Engine for the day's train. Of course, I missed her working because I was, well, au work myself. Interestingly (to a gearhead like me, at least), 301 had her prime mover freeze up years ago when still at whe mine. The block actually has waves in it from ice formation. Yet, all the cylinders still align with the crank, there were not block cracks, and she still runs great. Baldwins are tough. If this had uappened to an EMD, all new block would have been required..

The locomotive has been dedicated to the memory of Ed Weller, the long time SMS engineer who passed away in 2007. (The Baldwin Diesel Zone) Prime mover 606A, 6-Cylinder In-Line with Elliott model H-503 supercharger produces 1200HP...4-ea 362D Westinghouse traction motors & a Westinghouse 480D generator. and a YG40D auxiliary generator. Weight 240,000 lbs, length 48', top of rail to top of cab height 14', width 10' (American Rails)
