Alco-Schenectady built this "Niagara" (Northern) type steam locomotive in June of 1946 as NYC 4-8-4 #5500 (serial #74365). The loco served for only 5 years before being retired in May of 1951. Parts from it were used to maintain other 4-8-4's in service. It's remains were finally sold for scrap to Luria Brothers in 1956. Original specs - class S-2a, 79" drivers, impressive 275 psi boiler pressure, 25.5x32" cylinders, engine wt of 485,000 lb and tractive force of 61,570 lb. This is an ALCo-Schenectady builder's photo. |
