CP 4-4-0 #374 - Canadian Pacific
Title:  CP 4-4-0 #374 - Canadian Pacific
Description:  CPR's own Montreal "New Shops" built this historic 4-4-0 locomotive in June of 1886 as Canadian Pacific #374.This locomotive was the first transcontinental passenger train into Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on May 23, 1887, hence a significant Canadian rr artifact. She had two major rebuilds, first in the 1890s when her smoke box was extended, switched from wood to coal, and the 69" drive wheels swapped for 62". In 1914 another rebuild took place giving 374 a new boiler, valves, and general modernizing. In 1936, 374 became a movie star taking part in Silent Barriers or The Great Barrier, a dramatization and inaccurate telling of the construction of the CPR's Pacific Division. Finally retired after 59 years of service, 374 was saved from the cutting torch by folks who recognized the locomotive's significance. 374 was cosmetically restored to resemble her 1886 look and put on display in Kitsilano Park in Vancouver, this restoration rendered the engine inoperable due to key pieces being removed. 374 sat there unprotected in the salty ocean air for several years until it was decided to restore her for Expo '86 and was moved to its current location in the Roundhouse Community Centre where you can visit her today.
