NKP 0-8-0 #294 - Nickel Plate Road |
Description: |
As a Hoosier, it's always nice to share some Indiana related railroading history like this photo. This beefy 0-8-0 yard switcher was built by the Wheeling & Lake Erie own shops in July of 1930 and originally numbred as Wheeling & Lake Erie #5124 (WLE serial #30). The loco ended up later on the Nickel Plate Road roster as NKP 0-8-0 #294 yard switcher at the Frankfort, IN, yard. Its final disposition is unknown currently but probably scrapped in the late 1950's as diesels took over many of the duties. These were the specs listed on the back of the photo (unconfirmed) - 51" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine wt of 219,200 lb and tractive force of 52,500 lb. The photo was taken by Evans. |
