MILW 4-6-0 #1078 - Milwaukee Road |
| Description: |
It appears that MILW #1078 is in a storage line at the Mitchell, SD yard. The loco still looks great and has another 8 years of service before being officially retired in May of 1948. This loco originally started out as CM&StP Vauclain compound ten wheeler #355 (serial #18220, class B4) built by Burham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) in September of 1900. Like the entire B4 class, the loco was renumbered several times starting in August of 1907 to #1705 > in September of 1912 to #4305 > in 1921, it was simplified and renumbered to #2855 > in June of 1938, it was renumbered that last time to MILW #1078. After 48 years of dedicated service, the loco was retired and relegated to the scrap line in May of 1948. Rail fan Edwin Wilson took the photo which is now part of my rr collection. |
