PRR 3721, I-1S, 1948 |
Description: |
FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in August of 1948. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3721 and another locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #3721 is an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built in Juniata during June of 1919 and retired in March of 1956 after 37 years of faithful service. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers on a freight train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin ~ where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection. |
