Title:  DMIR 2-8-8-4 #229 - Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range
Description:  Lucky for it and us, this loco was donated for display rather than being sold for scrap like most of its sister units. This massive and powerful 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotive was built by Baldwin in January of 1943 as Duluth, Missabee & Iron #229 (serial #64708). It was ideally suited for handling 115-car, 8750-ton trains over .62% grades without stalling. Luckily for #229, it was saved from the scrapper's torch and donated to the Lake County Historical Society and now resides on display at Two Harbors, MN. Specs - 63" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, massive engine wt of 699,700 lb and massive tractive force of 140,000 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo.

Description:  Here is a side view of the massive DMIR 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam loco #229 while at rest in the Two Harbors, MN, yard. Built by Baldwin in January of 1943 (serial #64708). It lasted in heavy service until it was retired and donated to the Lake County Historical Society for display at the Two Harbors, MN depot. No photographer was listed for the photo.
