CB&Q Class XML-1 23013
Title:  CB&Q Class XML-1 23013
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-1 23013 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in January 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. From the book, "CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment", by Michael J. Spoor: "Built in 1955 at Havelock (CB&Q shops in Nebraska), the 100 cars of the Class XML-1, numbered #23000-23099 were all equipped with Evans DF (Damage Free) Loader Equipment.". The re-weigh date is: CH 7 77, although below the re-weigh stencil it is also stencilled: Fort Madison 6 68. I believe the trucks were known as Chrysler trucks, and once had a shock absorber (snubber) mounted in brackets between the coil springs, which have been removed by the time of this photo. There are two notes in the October 1971 Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER): Note #4 says that cars in the 23000 to 23099 (among other numbers) are specially equipped with belt rails and cross bars. Note #19 says that this car specifically (23013, among other numbers mentioned) is equipped with fork lift truck pallets, platforms or skids, which will be considered part of the car. Of course, that was in 1971, and these items may or may not be present at this date (1981). This car also appears to acquired a replacement door during a shopping.

CB&Q Class XML-1 23040
Title:  CB&Q Class XML-1 23040
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-1 23040 at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 100 in the 23000-23099 number series built in the CB&Q shops, Havelock, Nebraska in 1955. They were equipped with Evans DF (Damage Free) Load Equipment, one rail divider can be seen in the open door, and the DF symbol is stencilled on the door. Originally painted in the 1955 standard mineral red paint scheme, this car apparently was shopped just before the BN merger of 1970, and received the pre-merger cascade green paint scheme. The re-weigh date is: BJ-3-77, and to the left of the door it is stenciled: When Empty Return to Agent - CB&Q RR Columbus Nebr.

CB&Q Class XML-5 23223
Title:  CB&Q Class XML-5 23223
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-5 23223 at Knoxville, Tennessee on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q's shops in Havelock, Nebraska built 73 (#23200-23272) of these XML-5 boxcars during November 1964. They were equipped with Keystone underframes, Evans DF-2 bulkheads, 10'0" door openings, and a 4974 cubic foot capacity. All 73 were in assigned service. This particular car is stenciled "Return Emply To Agent CMStP&P...." and I cannot make out the last line, but there was an interchange point between the Burlington and Milwaukee at Crawford, Wisconsin (Prairie Du-Chien), and the stencilling looks similar to that. It is definitely Wisconsin. The door is placarded CLAY PRODUCTS, so it was likely assigned to a clay products manufacturer in Wisconsin. This car still has its roofwalk at this late date.

Description:  Bleeding off the air on Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XM-33B 24001 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was the second of 350 class XM-33B 50 foot single 8 foot door boxcars turned out by the CB&Q shops in Havelock, Nebraska in 1956. They were in the 24000-24349 number series, becoming BN 215950-216300. Delivered in Mineral Red paint with the slogan, "Way of the Zephyrs" on this side to the right of the door, and "Everywhere West" on the opposite side, this car has apparently been shopped sometime between 1968 and 1970, the roofwalk was removed, and it was painted in the pre-merger green paint scheme. The intention was to add the word NORTHERN below the BURLINGTON, but the type face was changed to a less-compact style by the time the merger was consumated. It is listed in the January 1969 Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER) as class XL, AAR A220, a note indicates that cars 24000-24009 are equipped with moveable bulkheads. In the October 1971 ORER it is shown as class XM, AAR 230.

NYC XL 47654
Title:  NYC XL 47654
Description:  NYC XL 47654 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to the October 1971 issue of the Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER), this was one of 99 cars listed in the 47500-47699 series, 50'6' inside length, 9'2" inside width, 10'6" inside height, 4888 cubic foot capacity, door opening 8 feet. Also shown in the lower left is PRR 469896 with a load of steel plate, and unfortunately the ORER generalized a bit on this series, listing 315 cars in the 469300-469999 series of various lengths, capacities, and load restraining equipment.

CB&Q Class XML-11 49414
Title:  CB&Q Class XML-11 49414
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XM-4C 49414 at Eola, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from the book, CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, by Michael J. Spoor:

CB&Q # 49400 - 49799 were built at Havelock ( CB&Q shops in Nebraska ) during 1966 as Class XM-4C. Built to a Northern Pacific design, these were the only boxcars on the Q to feature the waffle pattern on the car side. All of the XM-4C's featured the combination 8 foot and 6 foot plug doors with grain access doors ( at the top of the 8' door ) originally introduced in 1963 on the Class XM-4's. Also like the XM-4's, the XM-4C's had an inside length of 50 foot 6 inch and a 5,080 cu. ft. capacity. While the XM-4B's of 1966 came with roofwalks and ladders, the XM-4C's never received either, even though both groups of cars were being built at the same time. The waffle side cars featured protrusions on the exterior which held load tie-downs on the interior. I received the following from Rupert Gamlen, explaining a discrepancy in the classification of CB&Q 49400 - 49799:

CB&Q # 49400 - 49799 were built at Havelock ( CB&Q shops at Lincoln, Nebraska ) during 1966 as Class XML-11. Built to a Northern Pacific design, these were the only boxcars on the Q to feature the waffle pattern on the car side. All of the cars featured the combination 8 foot and 6 foot plug doors with a grain access door measuring 2 foot 9 inch x 5 foot 6 & 7/8 inch ( at the top of the 8 foot door ) originally introduced in 1963 on the Class XM-4's. Also like the XM-4's, the XML-11's had an inside length of 50 foot 6 inch and a 5,080 cubic foot capacity. While the XM-4B's of 1966 came with roofwalks and ladders, these cars never received either, even though both groups of cars were being built at the same time. The cars were originally fitted with 4 DF-2 belts, and the waffle side protrusions on the exterior held load tie-downs on the interior. Between 1967 and 1970, 126 of them were re-classed XM-4C, presumably when their loading devices were removed. The only exterior differentiation between the XML-11 and the XM-4C is the class stencil to the right of the doors as viewed.
