PRR 8671, AS-18AM, 1964 |
| Description: |
17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 April 1964. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8671, #8677, and #8678. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8671 was built in March of 1958, while #8677 and #8678 were built in April of 1958. In this context, they're serving as tail end pushers on a mixed-cargo freight train that's heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Note the trainphone apparatus on N-8 cabin car #478216. Partially visible on the far side of the 17th Street Bridge are some of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shop buildings. |
