| Here is page two of a four-page article by Frederick Westing entitled "Birth Of The Broadway." It was published originally in the March 1952 issue of "Trains & Travel" magazine, page 53. Photo Caption: "On her maiden run west, No. 29 ~ the Pennsylvania Special ~ gathers speed through Bergen Cut outside Jersey City with two sleepers, a diner, and a lounge-baggage car. On this memorable trip, Engineer 'Jimmie' Lee gripped the throttle of No. 1395, the high-mounted American Standard." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1395, a D-16A (4-4-0) "American" built in Juniata during May of 1898, rebuilt as a D-16 in October of 1911, and retired in March of 1923 after 25 years of faithful service. |
