17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took from the 17th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the Spring of 1960. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8664, #8678, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8664 was built in February of 1958 while #8678 was built in April of 1958. In this context, they're serving as tail end pushers for a mixed-cargo freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Also visible is PRR N-5 cabin car #477770. Note the trainphone apparatus on the cabin car's roof. |
