MofW Equipment. Here is an original photo that I took in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 8 August 1964. On the left is the Pennsylvania Railroad's Fairmont "Flame Thrower" #9845. This machine has at least two functions, depending upon the season. In the winter, it is used to melt snow and ice that might foul switches. In the summer, it is used to burn track-side weeds. On the right are two tank cars (carrying water) and PRR Motor Car #7715. These would follow the "flame thrower" (pictured at left), and a Railroader would spray water on any still-burning weeds. All are parked adjacent to the PRR's Freight Station on South Juniata Street. |
