| 12th Street. Here is an original photo that I took at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 28 July 1964. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8661, #8657, #8667, #9690, and #9776. #8661, #8657, and # 8667 are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8661 was built in January of 1958, #8657 was built in December of 1957, and #8667 was built in February of 1958. #9690 and #9776 were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9690 is an EF-15A built as an EH-15 in April of 1949, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and retired in October of 1967. #9776 is an EF-15A built in January of 1951 and retired in September of 1964. In this context, they're pulling a 59-car iron-ore train under the 12th Street Footbridge on its way up to Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and the steel mills of Western Pennsylvania. The cabin car is #477806. |
