| 17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 April 1964. At the right (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5877 and #5876. Both are EP-20's built by GM-EMD in April of 1949 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. They've just come down the eastern slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a nine-car passenger train, and are about to stop at the Altoona Station before proceeding on to Lewistown and points East. At the left (L to R) are PRR engines #8608 and #8607. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. They're returning to Altoona after making a helper/pusher run up the Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Photo taken adjacent to ALTO Tower. |
