24th Street. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 November 1964. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9657 and #9766-B. Both are EF-15A's built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9657 was built in March of 1950. #9766-B was built in January of 1951 and retired in December of 1966. They're about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge with a 76-car mixed-cargo freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. The N-8 cabin car is #478171. Bringing-up the rear are three ALCo "pushers": #8678, #8674, and #8667. The 73-car eastbound TrucTrain on the next track over is headed by engine #2249. Photo taken from the steps of SLOPE Tower. |
