NS out of service line (ex-G&F)
NS' old Georgia & Florida RR main. Looking north we can see CSX's Fitzgerald Sub in the distance. Today the line is ripped up from Nashville to Doulgas, GA.

Do you know why this segment was abandoned? Strange that it wasnt shortlined like the section north of Vidalia.

This trackage is still intact from Valdosta/Nashville to Willacoochee. It's owned by Georgia DOT and operated by the new, Omnitrax- owned Georgia and Florida Railway. As for why the Willacoochee-Douglas portion wasn't retained, I recall by the mid 1990's that there was only one remaining customer (a small pulpwood loading operation) left in Douglas. Two grain elevators served by the line, including the one in the background, had closed and several on-line industries on the south side of town had switched to trucks. Perhaps if the segment had been shortlined immediately after elimination of through trains in 1983 (following abandonment of the Douglas Swainsboro segment) and the resulting shortline couldve provided better service than NS, then it couldve been saved. Douglas has a decent amount of industry and still could support two railroads.
