Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1956. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8607 and #8610. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8607 was constructed in December of 1955, while #8610 was built one month later. Note the passenger-service air hoses just to the right of the coupler. Partially visible in the right background are portions of Juniata's 17th Street Bridge and the East Altoona Roundhouse.

Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 19 July 1958. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8607, #8610, and an A-A set of GM-EMD EP-22's whose road numbers are not recorded. #8607 and #8610 are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8607 was constructed in December of 1956, while #8610 was built in January of 1957. In this context, they're pulling a passenger train that's just leaving the Passenger Station and heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the ALCo's will be uncoupled and returned to this location to await another helper run up "The Mountain." 17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took from the 17th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the Spring of 1960. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8608 and #8610. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8608 was built in December of 1955 while #8610 was built in January of 1956. In this context, they're serving as tail end pushers for a mail & express train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for further assignment. Also visible is PRR N-5 cabin car #5010. The words under the number "5010" are "ASSIGNED TO PASSENGER SERVICE // RAILWAY EXPRESS AGENCY"

Magna Carta. Here is the first of two successive original photos that I took of the "Magna Carta Special" at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 June 1961. Prominent here is the Special's lead locomotive, PRR engine #8610, an APS-24MS built by the American Locomotive Company in January of 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower.

Shown here (L to R) are AR Tower, our three ALCo locomotives pulling the "Special" around the Gallitzin Wye, and the foundation of what was once a locomotive refueling and sanding facility. RR City. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 April 1964. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8609, #8610, and #8606. All are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8609 and #8610 were built in January of 1956, but #8606 was built one month earlier. They're running light to the Altoona Passenger Station where they'll couple onto the 18-car "Railroad City Limited" for its journey out the Hollidaysburg Branch Line, up the New Portage Branch via the Muleshoe Curve, making a loop through the tunnels at Gallitzin, and then heading down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Altoona Station. This photo was taken adjacent to ALTO Tower, just short of the 17th Street Bridge.

24th Street. Here is an original photo that I took just West of the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 10 January 1965. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8607 and #8610. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each; #8607 was built in December of 1955 while #8610 was built in January of 1956. They're coming down the eastern slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a 51-car merchandise freight train and will soon pass under 24th Street Bridge on their way through Altoona non-stop to Enola. The cabin car is N-8 #478101.

It was published originally in the Autumn 1996 issue of "The Keystone" magazine, page 46. Bottom Photo: Shown here are PRR engines #5898 and three other "E" units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5898 is an EP-22 built in 1951 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. Middle Photo: Shown here are PRR engines #8610 and another unit whose number is not recorded. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8610 is an APS-24MS built in 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. These units are actually the rear-end "pushers" for the mail-express train pictured in the bottom photo.
