PRR 7069, EFS-17M, 1960 |
| Description: |
NST. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken from the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in May of 1960. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #7069 and five more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are EFS-17M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7069 was built in October of 1956. In this context, they're pulling a manifest freight train past SLOPE Tower on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. The single smokestack in the distance marks the location of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. Note the pigeon flying in the sky, searching for snacks. |

| Description: |
Gallitzin. Here is an original photo that I took at the tunnels under Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 13 September 1964. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9785, #9788, #7069, and #8843. #9785 and #9788 are EF-15A's built by EMD in February of 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #7069 is an EFS-17M built by GM-EMD in October of 1956 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. #8843 is an AS-16MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. In this context, they're emerging from the eastern portal of the New Portage Tunnel with a 108-car coal train on their way down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Eastbound Receiving Yard in Altoona. The N-8 cabin car is #478171. |
