24th Street. Here is an original photo that I took just West of the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 10 January 1965. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8659 and #8666. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each; #8659 was built in January of 1958 while #8666 was built in February of 1958. They're coming down the eastern slope of the Allegheny Mountains with an 82-car merchandise freight train and will soon pass under 24th Street Bridge on their way through Altoona non-stop to Enola. The cabin car is N-8 #478217. |

Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in August of 1965. The photographer is not identified. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8659, an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in January of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. In this context, it's parked near the 17th Street Bridge in Juniata. Visible in the near distance (L to R) are the concrete slabs of the East Altoona Roundhouse, the Power Plant building sans smokestack, the Wreck Train in yellow, and the Eastbound Coal Train Classification Yard. Visible in the distance is the East Altoona Coaling Tipple. ("LouisFols"; #4 of 26) |

AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1967. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8659, #8667, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8659 and #8667 are both AS-18AM's rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8659 was constructed in January of 1958, while #8667 was built in February of the same year. They're serving as tail-end pushers for a mixed-cargo freight train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." Produced and distributed by FJC Products of Newport, Delaware. |
