PRR 9540, EF-15, 1961 |
Description: |
4th Street. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in January of 1961. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9540, #9502-B, and #9544-B. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9540 is an EF-15 built in July of 1948 and retired in December of 1963. #9502-B is an EF-15 built in July of 1947 and retired in December of 1962. #9544-B is an EF-15 built as an EH-15 in October of 1948, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15, and retired in November of 1966. In this context, they've just come down the Allegheny Mountains with a mixed-cargo freight train and are about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge into the Eastbound Receiving Yard.
