NYC 4-6-4 #5344 - New York Central |
| Description: |
Alco-Schenectady built this Hudson type steam locomotive in November of 1931 as NYC 4-6-4 #5344 (serial #68580. The loco was chosen to model a new streamlined styling in December of 1934. The loco was then labeled "Commodore Vanderbilt" after the NYC president. It received a newer streamlining during a rebuild in July of 1939. Sadly, the streamlining lasted only 6 years before being removed in October of 1945 to improve ease of maintenance mostly. After representing the "modern image "of the New Yprk Central Railroad, it was sadly retired in July of 1953 and uncerimoniously sold for scrap in 1954. Original specs - 79" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine wt of 352,000 lb and tractive force of 42,360 lb. This is an ALCo-Schenectady builder's photo. |
