Description:  Byerly. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Fred Byerly. Shown here is Penn Central Railroad engine #4977, an E40 (B-B) electric built by General Electric as New Haven Railroad EP-5 number "377" in June of 1955, rated at 4,000 horsepower, absorbed by the Penn Central and renumbered "4977," and retired in 1979 after 24 years of faithful service. The photographer's name, the exact date, and the location are not recorded. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Electric Railroading ~ Penn Central and Pennsylvania Lines" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (868-8).

Description:  Taken in Pavonia Yard (date approximate), this E40 once belonged to the New Haven Railroad (NH 377 EP-5). Upon acquisition by Penn Central and deligated to freight assignments, one of 4977's pantographs was removed as well as its steam generator. This unit was eventually scrapped in 1979.
