Description:  Horseshoe Curve-1966. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in mid-May of 1966. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6308 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. #6308 is an AF-27 built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1965 and rated at 2,700 horsepower. They're returning to East Altoona for another helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back.

Description:  Horseshoe Curve-1966. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in mid-May of 1966. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8613 and #8657. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8613 is an AS-24M built in August of 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower, while 8657 is an AS-18AM built in December of 1957 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. They're powering one hopper car and an N-5 cabin car around the Curve and up the Alleghenies to Gallitzin and points West.

Description:  +Horseshoe Curve-1966. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in mid-May of 1966. Shown here (R to L is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9819 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9819 is an EF-15A built in May of 1951 and retired in November of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. They're pulling a fully-loaded mineral train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Note the three 100-ton capacity "Yellow Ball" hoppers at the far left.

To their left is the enshrined PRR K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" steam locomotive #1361. Also note lots of budding trees! Photo taken from the site of the Kittanning Point Station.

Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6037 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. #6037 is an EF-25A built by GM-EMD in May of 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They're pushing a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegeheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Note "focal orange" N-5C cabin car #477839, as well as the old wooden Burlington Route boxcar. Partially visible at the right is four-track Signal Bridge 2418/7. Wave to the Fireman!

They're pulling ~ or, rather, braking ~ a merchandise freight train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East.

Shown here are two eastbound Pennsylvania Railroad freight trains. The one on the inner track is a merchandiser, while the one on the outer track is mixed cargo. Included among the "mixed cargo" are two GM-EMD engines: one switcher and one road unit. Visible at the right is four-track Signal Bridge 2418/7 and the steam-era steel water tank.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956 after amassing over 2,469,000 revenue miles, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 8 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, withdrawn from service and disassembled because of safety concerns, and is now being restored again for further excursion service.
