PRR 8676, AS-18AM, 1965 |
| Description: |
Derailment. Here is an original photo that I took at the site of a derailment in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. At the far left (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8676 and #8665. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8676 was built in March of 1958 and #8665 in February of 1958. They've just arrived to serve as "helpers" for a westbound passenger train due to arrive shortly. Visible in the center is PRR engine #8677, an AS-18AM built by ALCo in April of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. It's coupled to the "eastern" work train and steam-powered crane that are working on the derailed cars and locomotives of the eastbound freight train on the next track over. Visible at the right (L to R) are the two derailed locomotives, PRR engines #5631 and #8890. Both were built by ALCo and rated at 1,000 horsepower each. #5631 is an AS-10AM built in August of 1950 and #8890 is an AS-10 built in December of 1950. In the background are four of the original PRR 12th Street Car Shop buildings. That's 10th Avenue in the foreground. (#14 of 14) |

PRR 8663, AS-18AM, 1965 |
| Description: |
Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during September of 1965. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8663, #8675, #8655, and #8676. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1957-1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. Pulling a single N-5C cabin car, they have just passed under the 7th Street Bridge on their way to Hollidaysburg ~ where they'll pick-up a string of new and rebuilt freight cars and pull them up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West. #8663 and #8675 will lead, while #8655 and #8676 will push from the rear but uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." |
