Mid-Mountain. Here is an original photo that I took just West of Altoona, Pennsylvania, in mid-June of 1966. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8655 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8655 was built in December of 1957 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. They're serving as tail end pushers on a TrucTrain heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. The slope of the Horseshoe Curve's upper or western leg is discernable in the left distance. |
