Thomas C. Ayers
Dates:
7/14/1973 - 7/14/1973
Album Info:
Here are 13 original photos that I took of Penn Central Railroad property and trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during July of 1973. These 35mm color slides are arranged in the order that I took them ~ starting at 4th Street, then shifting to 24th Street. 'Twas a lazy, hazy day in July!

Title:
PC 4th Street Signal Bridge, 1973
Description:
Hazy. Here is an original telephoto view that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1973. In the foreground is the Penn Central's two-track, railroad-east-facing signal bridge. At the right are some of what used to be Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Car Shops ~ now occupied by Lithcote, a tank car refurbishing company. In the hazy distance are the two 7th Street Bridges ~ the nearer one old, the farther one new. Photo taken from the 4th Street Footbridge.

Title:
PC Altoona Yards, 1973
Description:
Hazy. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1973. Shown here at the left are several Penn Central freight trains awaiting crews and motive power to pull them up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Visible on the right is what used to be the Eastbound Receiving Yard. Given that some of the switches at the Yard's throat have been removed, chances are that the freight cars now stored here face uncertain fates. The two Floodlight Towers shown here were originally installed at the New York World's Fair in 1939! Photo taken from the 4th Street Footbridge.

PC 9136, SW9, 1973
Description:
Hazy. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1973. Shown here (R to L) are PC engines #9136 and #9158. #9136 is an SW-9 built by GM-EMD as Pennsylvania Railroad number "8536" in March of 1953, rated at 1,200 horsepower, and renumbered "9136" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. #9158 is an NW2 built by GM-EMD as New York Central number "8733" in September of 1948; rated at 1,000 horsepower, and renumbered "9158" in preparation for the merger. They're about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge with a four-car mixed-cargo local freight train, plus two cabin cars. In the good old days, this was one of the busiest places in Altoona as almost every eastbound freight train entered and then stopped in these Receiving Yards. Nowadays, almost every train passes straight through Altoona, many of the Yard's switches have been torn out, and its tracks are clogged with rusting freight cars.
