LSMS 4-4-0 #195, "P.P. Wright" - Lake Shore & Michigan Southern
Title:  LSMS 4-4-0 #195, "P.P. Wright" - Lake Shore & Michigan Southern
Description:  The actual build date for this loco is March of 1886 but the RRPA data base won't accept this date. This is an older (reprint?) builder's photo of Lake Shore & Michigan Southern 4-4-0 #195. Long before joining the ALCo group, Schenectady Locomotive Works built this 4-4-0 American type steam locomotive in March of 1886 as Lake Shore & Michigan Southern #195 with a title of "P.P. Wright" (serial #2068). This is the builder's photo of the loco taken at the Schenectady plant. The loco was absorbed into the parent NYC roster as NYC Lines #4105 in 1905 (class C-52). Then in June of 1907, it was rebuilt. In June of 1915 it was renumbered NYC Lines 4175. Finally in April of 1918, it was retired and scrapped. Rebuilt specs - 69" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 18x24" cylinders, modest engine wt of 94,000 lb and modest tractive force of 15,1000 lb.

Specs - serial #1954, class C-2, 63" drivers, modest 150 psi boiler pressure, 18x22" cylinders, petite engine weight of 88,550 lb, petite tractive effort of 14,426 lb. Scrapped circa 1912.

CB&Q 2-8-0 Class D-4-A 1919
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-0 Class D-4-A 1919
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-0 Class D-4-A 1919, unknown location but likely Schenectady, New York, September 1903, photo by the Schenectady Works of the American Locomotive Company, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in September 1903 by the Schenectady Works of Alco as #1919 (c/n 27733), it was renumbered in 1904 to #3174. In 1902 the Burlington placed an order for 100 2-8-0 type locomotives, 75 to be built by Alco, and 25 by Baldwin. These were the heaviest locomotives on the Burlington at the time, the Alco's weighing 201,000 pounds, and the Baldwin's weighing 199,540 pounds. They featured a straight top boiler, a large radial stayed firebox completely above the rear drivers with a 54 square foot grate area, fired through two separate doors on a sloping backhead. Working pressure was 200 psi. The driver diameter was 57 inches, the cylinders measured 22 X 28 inches with 12 inch piston valves actuated by Stephenson motion. Note the piston rod extension next to the pilot truck providing front bearing support. Most, if not all, of the piston rod extensions were later removed. This particular locomotive was retired in November 1929.

LSMS 4-4-0 #24, "Chicago" - Lake Shore & Michigan Southern
Title:  LSMS 4-4-0 #24, "Chicago" - Lake Shore & Michigan Southern
Description:  This is a very rare photograph of the inspection car built by Alco-Schenectady in 1906 as Lake Shore & Michigan Southern 4-4-0 #24 and carrying the name "Chicago". I found only one source of information on this loco - www.steamlocomotives.com. The website states " Unlike most inspection engines, the Chicago was built from scratch for the task. Its house extended from stack to footplate and was divided by a partition in front of the cab. The front room measured 12 feet long and had benches along the sides and two raised seats along the back. Especially thick boiler lagging protecting the occupants from the worst of the boiler's heat. The LS&MS gave a new name to the 24 in 1926, dubbing it "Mohawk". It was scrapped in June 1934. Specs - 66" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 15x24" cylinders, very modest engine wt of 99,500 lb and very modest tractive force of 14,806 lb." After searching the Alco-Schenectady records (Albert Webber III copy), I could not find the serial number for it. If you have additional info on this loco, please leave a comment below.

CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-1 2837
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-1 2837
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-1 2837 at (I believe) Schenectady, New York on an unknown day in 1907, photo by Alco, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built by Schenectady (Alco) in 1907 (c/n 43482), one of 15 class S-1's (#'s 2830-2844), copies of 30 Baldwin-built class S-1's built in 1906 road #'s 2800-2829. The S-1 class was based on the Class R-5 2-6-2 Prairies, with the tube length increased by 24 inches and the driver diameter increased to 74 inches. The cylinders, driving and trailing axle journals were the same dimensions as the R-5's permitting interchangeability between the two classes. This particular locomotive was rebuilt to Class S-1-A in 1924 and sold for scrap in April 1951. The absence of a headlight suggests that this locomotive was shipped to the CB&Q where the Q's own style of headlight (known among some as a cuckoo headlight because of its shape) would be installed.

Russian Decapod
Title:  Russian Decapod
Description:  At the request of the Czarist Russian government, ALCO built around a thousand of these light weight Decapods during WWI. Around 800 had been delivered before the Bolshevik revolution when deliveries ceased, leaving 200+ engines in the US. The USRA took them and distributed them to various railroads. Six examples still survive today, with Frisco 1630 at IRM being the "live one".

"Experimental" NYC 4-8-4 #800 - New York Central
Title:  "Experimental" NYC 4-8-4 #800 - New York Central
Description:  New York Central 4-8-4 #800 was an experimental, three-cylinder, high-pressure steam locomotive built by the ALCO-Schenectady in 1931 as part of an unsuccessful attempt to advance steam locomotive technology. This #800 was unique for its time, utilizing a high-pressure boiler in a three-section design to improve efficiency, but it ultimately failed and was written off. I could not find much more info about this loco including its serial # or its final disposition date. If you have info on this loco, please leave a comment below so I can improve the listing. This is an ALCo-Schenectady photo.

NYC 4-6-4 #5344 - New York Central
Title:  NYC 4-6-4 #5344 - New York Central
Description:  Alco-Schenectady built this Hudson type steam locomotive in November of 1931 as NYC 4-6-4 #5344 (serial #68580. The loco was chosen to model a new streamlined styling in December of 1934. The loco was then labeled "Commodore Vanderbilt" after the NYC president. It received a newer streamlining during a rebuild in July of 1939. Sadly, the streamlining lasted only 6 years before being removed in October of 1945 to improve ease of maintenance mostly. After representing the "modern image "of the New Yprk Central Railroad, it was sadly retired in July of 1953 and uncerimoniously sold for scrap in 1954. Original specs - 79" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine wt of 352,000 lb and tractive force of 42,360 lb. This is an ALCo-Schenectady builder's photo.

Big Boy Advertisement
Title:  Big Boy Advertisement
Description:  A 1941 ad by ALCO advertising the new 4-8-8-4s. World War 2 is still several months out, at least for the US. Depicted is UP 4000 in its as-delivered glory. The Big Boys topped all the competitors, coming in at 133 feet long, 595 tons in weight (including tender) and had a 24,000 gallon tank in a 47 foot tender. For reference, streamlined passenger cars usually measure 85 feet, the same length as the engine without the tender. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger)
