Winter. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 3 January 1965. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5712 and #5860-B. Both were built by GM-EMD. #5712 is an EP-22 built in October of 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower, while #5860-B is an EP-20 built in February of 1948 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. This A-B set is passing under the 7th Street Bridge with a 20-car passenger train on its way to Harrisburg. The time is 3:50 P.M. |

Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6309, #5861, #5860-B, and #5838. #6309 is an AF-27 built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1965 and rated at 2,700 horsepower; it's the "helper" engine in this context. #5861 and #5860-B are EP-20's built by GM-EMD in February of 1948 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5838 is an EP-22 built by GM-EMD in February of 1951 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. They're passing SLOPE Tower with a 13-car passenger train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh and points West. Wave to the Engineman! |

Beautiful color slide of the Spirit of St Louis headed up by PRR 5894 leaving Union Station in St Louis, MO. Built by EMD in March of 1951, it survived into the Penn Central era as 4294 and then Amurak as #301. Trailing immediately behind is PRR E7B #5860. Definiitely a variety of passenger cars in the background around the station. Photographer's initials may be MH(RW), maybe not. |
